Adidas Faces Global Boycott Calls over Israeli Soldier in Amputee Campaign Adidas is facing growing boycott calls after fronting its Israeli "Single Shoe" campaign with former Israeli soldier Shalev Biton. The service itself is simple: people who need only one shoe can buy one for half the price of a pair. But Biton lost his leg while serving in the Israeli military during the 2021 assault on Gaza, an 11-day offensive that killed 256 Palestinians, including 66 children. The choice lands amid the devastation in Gaza today, where thousands of Palestinians have undergone amputations since October 2023, many of them children. Doctors there have described amputating limbs with severe shortages of anaesthesia, while restrictions on medical supplies and prosthetics have hampered survivors' recovery. So one of the world's biggest sportswear brands built a campaign around limb loss and recovery, launched it in Israel, and handed the spotlight to a soldier from the military that filled Gaza's hospitals with amputees. The backlash was immediate; activists and public figures called for a boycott, and videos circulated of consumers binning their Adidas shoes. The question critics keep returning to is whether Adidas was tone-deaf or simply calculated that the outrage would not cost it anything. Either way, Adidas made its choice.
