Ma zanantum an yakhruju wa zannu annahum mani'atuhum husunuhum minallahi fa atahumullahu min haythu lam yahtasibu wa qadhafa fi qulubihimur ru'b; yukhribuna buyutahum bi aydihim wa aydil mu'minin (59:2): مَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن يَخْرُجُوا ۖ وَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُم مَّانِعَتُهُمْ حُصُونُهُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ فَأَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَمْ يَحْتَسِبُوا ۖ وَقَذَفَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الرُّعْبَ ۚ يُخْرِبُونَ بُيُوتَهُم بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَأَيْدِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ Banu Nadir, a tribe in Madinah that broke its treaty with the Prophet ﷺ and plotted against his life, believed their fortresses would protect them even from Allah. Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan shows how the ayah puts that protection first, as though something always had to stand between them and Allah: alliances, then status, then stone walls. There are only two realities: in the seen one, every protection eventually falls; in the unseen one, the only protection is Allah. Fir'awn made the same mistake when he dared Musa (AS) to call on Allah. Allah came at the tribe from the one place no wall covers, hurling fear into their hearts like an arrow. He asks you to imagine the safest people in the region unable to sleep. From the cricket pitch to the battlefield, winning and losing are decided in the heart first. Fear did what no enemy could: the tribe tore down its own homes with its own hands.
