Why are "Muslim" Countries Banning The Hijab?
وصف المقطع
How does a country that is 96% Muslim turn little girls away from school for wearing the hijab? In this episode of Muslim Atlas, we look at Azerbaijan’s school ban and a wider pattern across Central Asia, where Muslim majority governments in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have moved against the hijab, the niqab, beards and religious education. To understand why, we go back over a thousand years. From Prince Vladimir’s famous rejection of Islam, to Ivan the Terrible’s conquest of the Muslim khanates, to Catherine II’s invention of a state controlled muftiate, we trace how the Russian Empire built a system to contain and control its Muslim subjects. Then came the Soviet Union. Mosques were closed in their thousands, scholars were shot or sent to the Gulag, waqf lands were seized, scripts were changed twice in a single generation, and the Hujum campaign tore the veil from women at public rallies. The Kazakh famine alone killed around a quarter of the population. When the USSR collapsed in 1991, the same Communist Party men took power in the newly independent states, and they kept the same tools: official state Islam, the language of “extremism”, the demonisation of the veil, national identity placed above faith, and a surveillance state to enforce it all. This is the story of how colonised nations came to mimic their colonisers, and why the hijab ban is a symptom of something much older. 🔔 Subscribe to our YouTube to stay up to date with our latest productions. 🎉 Introducing the official OnePath Network MERCHANDISE STORE! 🏷️ 👕 👉 https://shop.onepathnetwork.com/ If you enjoy OnePath content, please consider supporting us to grow! ►https://onepathnetwork.com/dollar-a-day/?&utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=description Download the OnePath Network App for access to the latest and exclusive videos: https://onepath.onelink.me/mJxr/3de973bd Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQHRLH8RQIrdGWMhf5heWiA/join Facebook
